Competencies for Honors American Studies-Literature
Overview
- In order to earn credit for this course, students must earn a passing grade and demonstrate proficiency on each of the competencies listed below.
- Students will be given frequent practice on competencies before a summative assessment is assigned.
- If a student does not demonstrate competency on the first assessment, he/she will be given additional chances with new remediation assignments.
- Students will maintain a folder of competency assignments in the classroom, and thus will always know what competencies they may need to remediate.
- Students in need of remediation should seek out the teacher for additional help before/after school or during a study hall period.
Reading Competencies:

Listening, Viewing, Speaking Competencies
- Students will consistently identify and analyze the elements and devices that authors use (students need to demonstrate the ability to analyze each of the following elements and devices)

- Students will show evidence of a close reading of a text.
- Students will apply the elements of each genre (poetry, fiction, non-fiction) appropriately in order to understand the given text.
- Students will explain how historical context increases one's understanding of literature.
- Students will use all the stages of the writing process.
- Students will write to understand and to demonstrate understanding of a specific text.
- Students will write a five-paragraph essay that is organized, supported, coherent and persuasive.
- Students will consistently create works cited pages using proper MLA style and will include accurate internal citations (min. 3 sources)
- Students will apply the rules of grammar, usage, and mechanics to achieve standard written communication appropriate to grade level. (students need to demonstrate the ability to avoid each of the following errors.)

- Students will speak purposefully and articulately in seminars and class presentations.
- Students will listen and view visual images, electronic texts, written texts, audio files, and peer presentations attentively and critically.
- Students will demonstrate that they are confident, responsive, adaptive, and fluent communicators in both formal and informal settings.
